The Local Beaches

The West Sands Beach
There are few beaches in Scotland more impressive than the West Sands. A 2 mile uninterrupted stretch, where the opening shots of the movie "Chariots of Fire" were filmed, runs parallel to the world famous Old Course. It is one of the cleanest beaches in Britain currently carrying a Blue Flag Award, and it's only 15 minutes walk away from the Braeside House - Bed and Breakfast.

The East Sands Beach
This award-winning beach is located beside the old harbour and near the East Sands Leisure Centre. It is an area of great natural beauty affording splendid views across the bay. It is ideal for picnicking, sunbathing or watching the children partake of the many activities in the area or exploring the fascinating rock pools at the south end of the beach.

It has a tiny harbour from which fishing boats sail, mainly to catch lobsters and other shellfish. It is thought that the pier is very likely built with stones from the ruins of the nearby cathedral. The pier was repaired in 2003 after several years of closure, it is now fully accessible to the public again and is about 20 minutes walk away from Braeside House.
